Elijah’s disciple, aide, and successor, Elisha continued his master’s struggle with Ahab and his descendents, going as far as to have one of his own disciples anoint Jehu king as rival to Joram, son of Ahab.
Elisha is known for performing many miracles. He divided the Jordan River so that he might pass from one side to the other (2 Kings 2:13). He caused a widow’s empty cruse of oil to fill at his command (2 Kings 4:1-7). He blessed a barren Shunammite woman and she conceived (2 Kings 4: 14-17). He raised a child from the dead (2 Kings 4:35), and he cured the Aramean captain Naaman of leprosy (2 Kings 5).
