Based on four prophetic experiences in the year 520 B.C.E., Haggai chides the people of Israel to redouble their efforts to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. He assures them that this new Temple, while modest in comparison to its predecessor, the Temple of King Solomon, will someday come to rival it in majesty. Despite his focus on the Temple, however, Haggai warns the people that deeds, not animal sacrifice, are the key to holiness. Rebuilding the Temple cannot guarantee holiness; only rebuilding your life on a foundation of justice and compassion can do that.
